I love fried food.
And I love tofu.
We took a trip to this Asian Market for the first time the other day, and one of the gems I picked up (my arms were literally full of tofu products – so full that Blair had to go get a basket within 2 minutes of walking in the door) was Nature’s Soy brand Soy Cutlets.
I couldn’t find a good picture on the internet for them, but the packaging looked like this:

They’re basically deep fried inch-thick slices of tofu with a hint of flavor cooked in. I heated them in a frying pan, but they stuck to the pan, so I added a little water and ‘steamed’ them a little to reheat them. I then threw them into my miso noodle broth with a little tamari, and they were really good. Chewy, firm, and dense. Cling to a fork just enough to pick them up. Meaty texture with a soft inside and slightly tougher outside – almost an outer skin from the frying. Mmm!
I’m not going to lie, they are not exactly “light” or “diet” food. There are two huge cutlets in a pack and it says there are 3 servings at 150 calories each. Not too bad for fried tofu, but not great either. I opted to eat only one.
We also picked up the Nature’s Soy Soy Puffs and Nature’s Soy Hot and Spicy Tofu, both of which I have yet to try.
I found the official Nature’s Soy website, and they have some very interesting products including deli-sliced tofu and “soy jello” – i think I will pass on the Soy Jello, but the Tofu Cutlets are very good.
Of course, I’m *really excited* about the Tofu Puffs, but I need to do some more research about how to cook them. I found a recipe for stuffed garlic chili puffs (saying that makes me giggle) and a Tofu Puff recipe with a sweet and spicy dipping sauce. Sign me up!

Nature’s Soy also has recipes on their website.
The company has been in business since 1990, and is located in Philadelphia. There is some indication on their website that they may be a regional company, but I’m not positive about that. The last “News” item on their website is from 2008… I guess no news may be good news?
I plan to document my adventure with these tiny puffy beauties, and I think I’m going to try something along the spicy/sweet avenue. Stay tuned.
